Origin

The Sacred Heart Diet could possibly be the oldest fad dieting, still in use today. Every 9 to 15 years it appears to resurface again with a completely new name. It has also been defined by some of pop culture’s most iconic figures to be one of the century’s greatest examples of an urban legend.

However, no one knows when and where the Sacred Heart Diet was first formed. There is also a myth that the diet was created by numerous hospitals around the country, but no medical facilities have ever claimed it. According to the American Dietetic Association’s fad dieting timeline, the Sacred Heart Diet was created some time back in the 1950’s, but it might date back much earlier. Back in World War 1 (1914–1918) there was a recipe for “Doughboy Cabbage Soup” so there is existence that the cabbage soup diet has been around even longer. The name “Military Cabbage Soup Diet” was most likely derived from Doughboy’s World War 1 Cabbage Soup recipe, but the Doughboy’s recipe lacked the bouillon cubes, tomatoes and several other seasonings included in the latest versions of the cabage soup diet.

After the 1950s, the cabbage soup diet was revitalized in the early 80’s as the Dolly Parton Diet, then it became the TWA Stewardess Diet and also the Models Diet. The diet developed these names due to the belief that iconic models, celebrities and flight attendants needed to meet demanding weight check ins to keep their jobs. There were also many claims the dieter would lose over 9-17 LBS in the first seven days because cabbage supposedly has zero calories.

Then in the mid 90’s the cabbage Soup diet reemerged yet again. The diet was recognized by numerous medical centers, health associations and cardiology departments during this time period. Allegedly these institutions gave the cabbage soup to obese and overweight patients getting ready for heart surgery to assist them in losing weight before undergoing operation. Consequently the cabbage soup diet became known as the Sacred Heart Diet, Spokane Diet, General Motors Diet, Mayo clinic diets, Miami Heart Institute Diet and the American Heart Association Diet.
