While this is a type of treatment that is favored by many due to the reduced withdrawal symptoms, so therefore discomfort involved, there can be many concerns with it.  Since it is using another type of medication, there is a risk of essentially replacing the addiction. Meaning some individuals become addicted to the new medication they are given, as opposed to the previous opiate they had been addicted to.  While these medications do have extremely beneficial uses during detox to ease withdrawal symptoms, long term use can create dependence.  

Another concern is the setting being outpatient, in which an individual is still in their current environment.  This furnishes the possibility of falling right back into the same old habits when they do not have any structure conducive to their recovery.  Inpatient rehab allows a person to get out of the environment that has been contributive to their drug use while they receive treatment.  This way, when returning to their day to day life, they are able to restructure their lifestyle around their sobriety that has been attained.
